Final Project Update

For my final project, I will be developing a literary interpretation about the experience of women in The Secret River

My current plan is to cover four main categories: lower-income women in early 1800s London (like Sal and Thornhill’s mom and sister), higher-income women in early 1800s London (like the green slippers lady), settler colonist women in early 1800s Australia (like Sal, Mrs. Herring), and finally aboriginal women in early 1800s Australia. I haven’t started research yet and this may end up being too much information to cover, in which case I will adjust.

Since these categories only cover two different locations, I am a little wary of using a geography-based platform like Neatline. I’m also unsure about using a time-based platform like TimelineJS, since all the topics are within the same time period. Maybe the best platform will be an exhibits tool like the Omeka one, a slides presentation with interactive components, or another visual tool like developing an infographic on Canva. Determining my final project’s platform is my current challenge, since it will impact the type of research and writing I do. If anyone has suggestions, comment and let me know!

To be completely honest, the final project has taken a back-burner position for me for most of this quarter. With a deadline so far away, it is difficult for me to motivate myself. I always end up getting distracted by other assignments and projects that are due sooner, and fail to make the final project a priority. I wonder if I should dedicate an hour of every week to working on the project or adopt another time management strategy. Hopefully once I finish the Equiano project, I’ll catch up on this one and have more to update soon!

  1. I like your topic, Heather! I agree that using NeatLine may be to location-based for your project. Do you have any other ideas for services to use (I am in the same boat)? My final project has been off to a similarly slow start, since this quarter has been super busy. I think the one hour a week idea is the best way to go, since it will prevent me from procrastinating it all until finals week like last time. I'm sure we'll pull through this, though! Good luck, Heather!

  2. Hey Heather! I really like your topic choice. I think that women's experience was something that I wish I could've learned more about in The Secret River. I agree with regards to your "project taking the back burner" statement. It's hard to prioritize something so far away since I feel like I have more pressing, time-sensitive things to do now. Regardless, I'm sure your final project will be wonderful and I am excited to see it. Good luck in the meantime!

  3. Hey Heather! I've been having a similar struggle with choosing my platform for the project. I think what I am going to do is complete my research first and let that inform my platform, rather than the other way around. Being in the Grenville group, I was focused on that at the start of the quarter and honestly haven't picked up my research quite yet after. Reading everyone's blog posts this week are certainly motivating me to get back on track! Best of luck!

  4. Hey Heather! For starters, I think that is a great topic for your final project. That is a pretty good starting place and categories to explore. Coming from someone who did research on British and colonial research in the Grenville group, I found it easier to find information about colonial women in Australia. I was able to find more sources around colonial women in Australia then British women in London during this time. One would think that there would be more information regarding Women in London during that time period but I didn't find too many sources on SCU's library database. I would suggest perhaps looking for some scholarly resources through the internet to get a better and more holistic idea of women's experience during that time. Hope this helps and I wish you luck!

  5. Hi Heather! This topic sounds really interesting and different from other topics I've heard about so far. It sounds like you have a solid plan about organization, too, which I think will help you in the long run. Working on the project for one hour a week sounds like a good plan and I'm definitely going to try that out too. You could also do smaller increments of only 30 minutes if you find yourself getting distracted or overwhelmed by other assignments.

  6. Wow Heather! You seem to have a solid handle on what you want to do for you final project which is really impressive. I think that having a plan and being able to think about it is all that you really need at this point. I, unfortunately haven't even really gotten to this point. But I have faith that I, along with everyone else, will be ready by the time the project is due.
